089: Honouring Your Word For Stronger Relationships

Honouring your word is an enduring principle that stands as a pillar in both business and in your personal life. It encapsulates trust, commitment, and credibility. As entrepreneurs we are bound by a lot of responsibilities and it’s easy to neglect this principle and compromise on the commitments we make.

In this episode, we dive deep into the significance of honouring your word and the impact it can have on your business and life partnerships. Faced with major responsibilities, entrepreneurs are called to establish trust and credibility through consistent follow-through on promises made.

A good reputation is built by doing what you say you will do. So when you agree to something, you need to honour it no matter how small it may seem. And when your word turns into empty promises, it slowly destabilises relationships and trusts until everything collapses.

Keeping your word nurtures strong partnerships and enables growth. It’s not about grand gestures, but modest actions – making sure promises, regardless of magnitude, are fulfilled.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL FIND OUT…

  • The impact of keeping your word on your clients and partners (00:17)
  • Why our word is crucial and how affects our decisions (02:15)
  • The possibilities that can arise when we honour our word (03:53)

Carl Taylor Snippet (00:00):

As an entrepreneur, as a man, as a human being, are you honouring your word? When you say you’re gonna do something, you do it, not just for other people, but for yourself? Have you said I’m gonna get fit, and then done nothing about it, I’m going to join the gym, and you never joined, I’m going to pick up the milk, honey, and you forgot to pick up the milk. Our word is crucial. And in the context of a client or a partner, if they can’t trust you with the little things, how can they trust you with the big things in life too?

Carl Taylor (00:42):

Hello, and welcome to the Entrepreneurs Rising podcast. I’m your host, Carl Taylor. And in this episode, we’re going to talk about honouring your word. So what is honouring your word mean?

Well, as an entrepreneur, we understand the idea of responsibility, right? We are responsible for how clients were responsible for our team, we’re responsible for our own income, we’re responsible for paying taxes and providing and contributing to society, we’re responsible for providing a good quality service to our community at large our market, right, we’re there to serve.

So there’s a lot of responsibility that sits on our shoulders. And this was a lesson that I had to learn, not necessarily in business, but outside of business. And so men in particular, I want to say this to you, I believe every entrepreneur needs to be aware that our word is really important in the context of business.

And then for men, your word is crucial at home with your wife, partner, spouse, girlfriend, whatever you refer to her as your word creates safety. And if you break your word, you lose trust, you erode trust over time, and it’s a bit like a bridge.

If you build a bridge, and it’s got a few nuts and bolts, if you take one or two nuts and bolts and you loosen them or remove the bridge is going to be weaker, but it’s not necessarily going to fall apart. But if enough of those come out, the whole thing collapses.

And it’s not like heaps, it’s only a certain amount, and the whole thing collapses. And so trust in your relationship is the same thing. Now we could take what we’ve just said about relationship.

And if we bring it back to the business context, that is, the same thing could be true of our clients and of our market. You know, little things can often survive, little loosening of bolts, you might have a few Wiggles, but you’re okay, if overarching ly, you deliver a good service.

However, they aren’t addressed, they erode over time. So this brings me back to a very simple principle that I really want you to take on board, as an entrepreneur, as a man, as a human being, are you honouring your word? When you say you’re going to do something, you do it, not just for other people, but for yourself. Have you said I’m going to get fit, and then done nothing about it, I’m going to join the gym, and you never joined, I’m going to brush my teeth.

And you didn’t brush your teeth. I’m going to pick up the milk, honey, and you forgot to pick up the milk. Our word is crucial. And in the context of a client or a partner, if they can’t trust you with the little things, how can they trust you with the big things in life too? Your Word is crucial.

And the more you can build a reputation with yourself as someone who does what they say, no matter what. Now, does that mean that you might make a commitment and you never backtrack on a commitment.

Sometimes, that’s going to be an internal thing for you to discern and work out. But there will be times that you can make a new decision you can make a new decision and communicate that clearly when it truly is an aligned for you and the greater good.

But in general, if you make a commitment, if you say hey, I’m going to be somewhere, be somewhere, I’m going to be there at that time. Be there at that time, be a man human being honor your word, to your clients, to your partners, to your kids, more importantly to yourself.

If you can build that internal reputation with yourself as I’m someone who does what I said said I’m going to do not only will you see changes in your business well, but you’ll see changes in all of your aspects of the world and the way you carry yourself through life. And I want that for you.

So just a short one today, that little tidbit. On your word, be someone who is honorable and does what they say they’re going to do.
